Discover the Enchanting Ancient City of Kaunos
Nestled near modern-day Dalyan, Kaunos was once a thriving seaport, its origins tracing back as far as the 10th century BC. This ancient city, rich in history and mythology, was home to two ports—the southern port in the southeast and the inner port in the northwest. However, over time, the silting of the delta led to the decline of its role as a major trade hub.

According to legend, Kaunos was founded by King Kaunos, the son of the Carian King Miletus and Kyane, and the grandson of Apollo. Its storied past is reflected in remarkable archaeological finds, including the neck of a Protogeometric amphora dating back to the 9th century BC or earlier. The city was first mentioned by Herodotus in Histories, where he recounts how the Persian general Harpagus advanced against the Lycians, Carians, and Kaunians during the Persian invasion of 546 BCE.
